Photography is a serious hobby for me, so it was quite a surprise to be invited by a friend to go with him to the Houses of Parliament to take shots of an inaugaral meeting with several top MPs etc. My kit consists of 5D, 24 -105 L lens and 430EX flash. If any of you have any tips about does and don't that would be really appreciated. You never see the pro's playing with their camera settings much, so how do they set themselves up to be sure exposures with flash etc. are always a winner? I have my ideas but always willing to learn from any pro's out there.

I use very much the same setup as you, but I diffuse the flash with a Stofen diffuser and a Gary Fong Lightsphere II diffuser.

My Canon 5D with 580 flash is set at 100 / 200 iso and I usually shoot raw + large jpeg.

The flash with Stofen is used on a flash bracket to one side , or the lightsphere on the hotshoe as shown on Gary Fongs site.

I trust this helps.

Thanks for that. I was also thinking about camera settings when you are a Press Photographer. Do the pro's go for manual camera and auto flash, or programme settings for camera and flash?
