I'm having an ongoing battle with Virgin (ISP) and BT (phone line) who both deny any responsibility for my connection problems, I've done everything Virgin have advised from running straight from the main BT socket, removing Norton internet security!, buying a brand new router, reinstalling their own broadband modem when the problem happens, but alas it's still a pile of crap and I swear I had better connections with 56k dial up!

BT have checked the line.....no fault....came to the house...checked the main socket and his laptop came up with errors that he had to "phone a friend" and ask what they meant! lol....his friend told him it was normal because the line didn't recognise his laptop....if that's true then I'll eat my own laptop which connected with no faults when it was a new member to the family phone line!

My problem is that my connection is dropped constantly up and down like a bloody yoyo....it's not a wireless problem I have because the Belkin (groan I know I should have read up on these first) combined modem and wireless router is hard wired to the pc, only use the wireless for laptop obviously which works fine WHEN I actually have a connection.

My question really is....If I keep saving my log files from my router as proof of what is happening...can the information be used as proof of it being the line at fault or am I way off the mark?...just wish I knew what it all meant....the only obvious bit to me is LINK UP...LINK DOWN....LINK UP....LINK DOWN....

It's driving me completely nuts...I'd love to just change ISP but if the line is at fault that wont get me anywhere!:russian_r

its a long shot but a mate of mine just got bt broadband in the new live thing. he has it on his main pc, and a second pc connects wirelessly ( i set it up), for a few days everthing was fine, the wireless would drop slightly then rise, then one day it stopped. So he installed the same bt software on his wireless pc that was on his main pc, connects wirelessly now no problem with constant full connection.

Is it possible that virgin have software u use to connect to the net etc and u could put that also on laptop and try a wireless connection.

Cheers for the reply mate....I'm open to any suggestions as I'm getting desperate! lol

I don't use any software from Virgin now but did when I used their modem which still had the same problems? That's all uninstalled now...I even formatted the pc and started from scratch but still no different...and my wireless connection is fine, it's my main connection that's giving me all the grief....but saying that sometimes it can run all day without a glitch but not very often which makes me think it is an intermittent line fault?

I'm supposed to be on "upto 8mb broadband" but sometimes my connection can be as low as 600kb!

might be stating the obvious but have u got ur filters installed correctly, to start with id just stick the filter in ur main wall plug, then broadband from that and ur phoneline from other, and see what happens for a bit.

Been through about six filters lol....I did read somewhere about cordless phones being a problem but I think I'm right in saying they might only interfere with a wireless connection?

Going to have a swap around anyway and see what happens....get the phone into another room just incase it is that....it's about the only thing I haven't tried yet!

i have cordless phones and no issues, i know when the filters are wrong, that generally when the phone rings, the internet drops if there is issues.

Try disconnecting ur phone for the shift, unplug it and run your broadband and see what happens. But i cant see it being that if ur filters are fine.
