Does anyone know where the custom settings for camera RAW are stored? I had a bunch of custom presets I did myself, which I found quite useful for basic adjustments before tweaking, but this was when I wasn't using lightroom. I was wondering if there is a way to grab these settings and add them to the lightroom files? Somehow? lol.

They are XMP files and the ones I have are in my documents so they are auto backed up

just put them where you want and in raw go to load and point to the preset

But will this translate to lightroom, as I want to use it instead of RAW for my editing? Or do I need to manually copy all of my adjustments and save a new custom preset?

I think Jim means some reusable presets rather than the changes he made to an image?

Yes. eg: I had a nice set of adjustments for a gritty b/w portrait which I saved as a custom setting. I could select this in camera RAW rather than manually enter all the adjustments again. I want to move these presets (from the place they are stored) to the place that will allow me to use them in lightroom, if possible.

They should translate.

But looking at it, it isn't that easy... Because what you are doing is the workflow, basically in reverse here, but this is the only way I can think of...

Have a look how many presets you've got, then go and grab that many images in RAW format, and just plop them in a new folder, then rename them in a running order, so you don't get confuddled later down the line, so you've got Image1.RAW, Image2.RAW, Image3.RAW, etc...

Then fire up Lightroom, import these images to the library without moving, then go and copy the XMP files from where you've got them from and then paste them in to the folder with the images in... Now rename those Image1.xmp, Image2.xmp, Image3.xmp, etc

Then after that, go in to the develop module, and for each image go to the Photo -> Read Metadata From File, and it will import the XMP settings from disk. Then where you have the Presets, click on the + to the right, and then save the image settings as a new Preset (though you may need to update the calibration process to 2010 if this is LR4), and make sure you aren't showing any lens correction, grads or crop.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh....... thankyou Sean! Looks slow and complicated reading through it, but I think I'll sit down over the weekend and see if I can get it right. Expect a few stupid style questions from me in the next 48 hours as I try to make it work!!!

Not used this feature myself, but now all are clear the answer should be forthcoming.
