What is a grid?
A grid is a little honeycomb plate that can be attached inside the reflector of your strobe light to modify the light coming out of it.
What good does THAT do me?
It's all about CONTROL my friend... All about control...
It's so much easier to SHOW you then to try to tell you what grids do. Check on this animation. Please excuse my living room. I was just mucking around one afternoon.
The strobe is set in the basic position and my subject set to be short lit. Both the settings on my strobe and my camera do not change from shot to shot. A fact you can see by watching the ambient light in the window in the background... the only thing that changes shot to shot is what grid I put in the light.

Control my friend... CONTROL.
You can't PAINT with light until you are able to CONTROL your light.
