Can anyone please tell me what might cause an IP conflict between two computers that are networked together via a USB wireless thingy...

My computer is networked to Vlado's...and generally for some unknown reason I generally cannot connect to the internet if his computer wasnt connected...but something must have changed because now I can access the net without his computer...but now he is having problems accessing the net...and I keep on getting a message saying that there is an (it says Windows - system error) "IP address conflict with another system on the network"....and everytime this pops up one of us (usually him) but sometimes both of us gets disconnected...and it wont re-connect...well it does but only of its own free will...

I am sooo hopeless with this stuff..and he aint much better...

any idea's...?

My brother had the same thing. It was down to conflicting IP addresses.

Both computers on the network were trying to run off the same IP address, so make sure that the option for automatically obtaining an IP addy is set on one of them...something along the lines of a check box saying "obtain IP address automatically"

Probably too simple and I know nothing about wireless usb thingys tbh but do you have the same IP Addresses?

Sounds like they are both trying to connect with the same IP causing one to get chucked off.

I'm guessing you are using a cable/ADSL router of some sort. Otherwise, please ignore the advise below as it will likely break things worse.

If you are using WinXP check within Control Panel > Network Connections > Wireless/Local Area Connection (depending on which you are using), then right click and choose Properties, highlight Internet Protocol and choose Properties.

For the vast majority of residential ADSL/cable connections this should all be set to 'obtain automatically'. Should this be set to anything else, take a note of the settings and set to automatic and press ok on the various windows.

This should resolve the problem. Unlikely to be the cause in this situation, but might be worth if you are running some wireless setup to make sure the router has security on in case a computer belonging to a neighbour or similar accidentally connecting to your router and taking the IP.
