break this forums virginity...

so here goes...

I get confused over what is the best format (?) to edit and save your pics in for printing...as in RGB, CMYK etc

and while I am asking...why is that when I save my images as a 6 x 4 and then I print them as a 6 x 4 the labs always seem to crop a bit off one end of the image...

so...was it as good for you as it was for me....;)c

i think that RGB is what you save to for lab / photo printing CMYK is for the printing of books etc etc and is only used if you are saving for printers to make labels or books, calenders etc.

no idea about the 6x4 crop You are using the crop tool arent you..... of course you are silly me...... but i do know a PRO tog would said "crop tool whats that then " !?!??!??!?!?!?!:dizzy:

and as for the viginity bit... well that has me ****ED... so sorry i cant help there

Hi Sue,

S/RGB is usually most used for printing.

Should you crop your image 6 x 4 @ 300dpi/ppi then is should print to exactly the paper size. I do the same for 16 x 20, 8 x 10 etc.

Either that or select the option "fit to frame" so the machine will try to size your images as a best fit for the output. (print size).

Hi Bindii,

In answer to your question for photo printing as David rightly said RGB is the norm and most printers would ask for the sRGB colour space profile. However newer lab equipment will now read most colour profiles and print accordingly so its not so much of an issue. As for cropping on 6x4 files for 6x4 prints not to sure about that. Check what dpi the printer uses this varies dependent on the lab they use. However even if you dpi was out it should crop one end of the image??? It would result in a slight crop on all 4 sides so I would ask why that was happening. Hope this helps

Thanks guys...and yup I use RGB...and the crop tool...

The lab cropping one end of my pic is weird though...I set it 300dpi and showed them the image on disc and then the prints where they could see that one end has been cropped...its not much but it can really affect the image...they don't know why it is happening either..

back to the drawing board me thinks...

Thank you! :)

Hi Sue........

I had the same problem with 7x5 prints at a local lab. I was getting about 20 flyers printed, and it was cheaper to print them at "30 Minute Photos" than at a printers.

Their machimes would cut the paper slightly short on one side, my flyers came out with an uneven border!

Check to see if your lab uses the 'high street' automatic machines - might be the same reason. The manager had no idea his machines were doing it until I showed hime the borders!

Oh Thanks Snorks....I will ask them next time I am in....if they are is there anything that can be done to rectify it do you think?

Ummmm, my guy didn't think so - but then that WAS the last time I saw him, so he may well have it sorted by now!

I would have thought it would just be a case of tightening a scew somewhere, but that would probably entail calling out a Fuji/Kodak Qualified engineer!

Good luck wiv it Sue!

I set my cameras to Adobe colour profile and process in Adobe CS2

Am I going to have problems printing through Ashton?

Cheers

In theory, you shouldn't have a problem because photoshop is supposed to translate from the colour space of the image file to the colour space set on the pc/printer. Note I did say 'in theory'. I got some funny results occasionally, so I set computer, printer and camera all to sRGB and things seem to be pretty reasonable since then. All I need to do now is calibrate the monitor properly and all should be well.

Sorry Mark I only just noticed this question Today. In answer to your colour profile question. The Adobe proflie would not cause you any problems in relation to our printing. Our equipment with take the profile information from the file which ever profile it is and print accordingly.

the guy who does my printing leaves the odd image uncut for me to trim if it's a bit dodgy, ie. 8x6 comes back 9x6, as the machine can only crop 1 end and not centre the image, it's all to do with full frame, so i'm told.

Hi Dotty,

That might be the case depends what equipment he/she has. 8x6 is always a problem as the ratio pretty much always crops an image whether from Neg or digi,(full frame as they say) most places would centre for you unless they are batch printing or do not have the facility to do so as in this case.

Just had to add, thats me coverted over to the print service too, ive sent my test prints away to dave, got them back the next day, with various different settings so i could pick the best looking compared to my screen images, service was second to none, packaging was excellent, communication was excellent.

So from me its a deffo and highly recommended, having been with photobox for so long i was happy with them but in all honesty i was just an account number with them, the personal touch here really makes it for me, quickness of uploading via ftp or sending a cd away, constant contact. A+++++
