    d-slr nikon 80d

How do you ever learn to use all the functions on this camera is there anywhere other than the instruction manual. Also how do you get the misty water effect like its slowed down or somethin. i know a former photography student should know this but i dont lol.

im still learning the functions on my 350D, i think the trick is to pevent yourself from using the automatic mode and force yourself to try and acheive your desired picture using aperature priority, shutter priority or full manual... eventually you start to get an idea of where all the options are and what they do...

misty water is all about slow shutter speed

    you can achieve this by:

keeping the aperature up as low as it will go ( F22ish ) and keep the ISO as low go also ( ISO100ish )

if tis too bright and your still not getting it misty enough its time to break out a nuetral density filter

    I got a D80 :D

Best way to figure out the features is to use it, play about. That and ask questions here.

For the smooth water effect you need a slow shutter speed, anywhere from 1/4 second onwards, although, as said, the slower the shutter the more you need to reduce your aperture and/or use a neutral density filter or two (as I intend to this weekend)

I've got a D80 too, I've never taken it off manual since I've got it! Taken loads of rubbish shots but I'm starting to learn what needs to be tweaked and when so the shots are getting better.

Practice, practice and more practice is the only way I've learnt how to use it.

I aspire to put my camera on manual. Need to learn more about the ratio and relationship between aperture and shutter speed in given lighting conditions first.

its not as scarey as you would expect - honest!

if the nikon is anything like the canons then you get a little meter thing at the bottom of the viewfinder to help you get the exposure right.

my way is to decide wether a specific aperature or exposure is my priority for the shot, if i want a specific aperature i would set that with a wee dial. chances are that withought adjusting the shutter teim its gonna be way off, the wee meter thing ( on canon 350d there is a bar labeled -2 stops to +2 stops with a wee light underneith ) shows you what the camera thinks you need to do to get the right exposure. change the shutter time till the light is centered on 0 and you know have what the camera thinks is the perfect exposure. fire a shot then fine tune your shutter time to get the pic you want.

hope it helps a little... i found forcing myself to shoot manual mode for some of the time did me a great benifit and highly recomend it

To be honest I had no idea what I was doing but as it's digital I figured it wouldn't matter how many shots I got wrong. I'm just a hobby tog too so no pressure to get things spot on.

Yes there is a little meter in the viewfinder, I only discovered it a little while ago, still going through the manual LOL! It is really, really useful.
