    Cokin Filters

Hi guys i have been lent a few cokin pseries filters to use over the weekend. poloriser 8 point star and some graduated filters a red one for mono a tabaco for sunset blue for artificial light

now if i get on with these filters what are the pro's and cons of the p series instead of the round threaded filters.

if i were to purchace some of these is it best to buy 'COKIN' or are 3rd party after markets just as good??

    Cheers Dazzler.

The advantage of the Cokin (and other similar) ranges is that one filter will fit over all you lenses.

A threaded filter, will fit a specific lens size, so two lenses, of different sizes will need a filter to fit each of them.

The Cokin range comes with adapter rings (very cheap on ebay) to fit the lens, and only one filter is needed as it can be transferred to any of your lenses.

As for 3rd party ones, it goes without saying that there are a number of makes to fit the P series, some good, some bad, some damned awful.

Cokin are very good, Hoya also have a good reputation. A general rule would be that you get what you pay for with filters.

I once asked a pretty girl if I could take her picture naked.
She said "No, put your clothes back on please"

    Cokin pros--cheap
    readily available
    easily stackable
fit on any lens with appropriate adapter
ND grads can move up and down
    Cokin cons--resin
    easily scratched
    static attracts dust
    bulky to store
    NDs have magenta cast

    Round pros--better quality
    no colour cast

Round cons--Grads cannot be moved up/down to horizon
without step rings each filter will not fit all lens
