thanks for posting this. Ive been a fan of Harlon Ellison for many years.He was a visionary in the sci fi genre and has over the years come up with many many wonderful stories which have been made into films,TV, an literature. He has a wealth of knowledge and knows his stuff.I think some of the things he said are so true. It was also incredible to see all the things that he has come up with that people ripped off. The story of Terminator and how a certain major film director admitted he ripped off the story from a couple of Ellison's Outer Limits episodes was eye opening.Also the connection between him and the Star wars phenomena..awesome guy.Mega talented and .....he made the best scifi adventure series ever-Babylon Five.

I dont think its always as clear cut as is portrayed in the video. In that case yes, it's warner brothers and a well know writer, but sometimes to able to say 'my work can be seen on ............................' (insert well know outlet) may be the bit of credibility you need to get an importanr job. It may also be the motivation you need personally to think 'my work is good enough'.

As long as people ask - we are talking "ideas" and expansion here, not "work" for free.

If you feel your work have a value (everyone else I know works for money) then you charge what is appropriate for your time and creatativity. You work will always be good enough if it is free!!

If you want to work for free you will have many employers. No bank balance, be poor and everyone will believe you are "cheap" and your ideas are next to worthless.

I was called on Friday night by the picture editor of a major newspaper asking to use one of my images for a front page story in the paper - you think I told him he could have it for free - just use my name on the front page?

The cost was upped to leave out my logo screw the fame - pay me the money!!!

I dont get paid for my own personal projects

Some projects are a combination of the two
