    Cokin Filters

I am considering getting a few filters and am intrigued by the Cokin range, which appear to offer quite an amount of flexibility and a seemingly huge range of filter types.

Can anyone help me out with answers to the following, however:

-Will the Cokin adapter ring and 'filter mount' fit on to my lens (58mm Canon) with the screw-on UV filter I permanantly keep on it?

-Does the use of the Cokin system make the camera unwieldy at all? Surely having that on the end of the lens greatly affects balance when not on a tripod? How about when zooming with the lens?

The filters I am most interested in are an ND filter (to try with running water), a 'star 8' filter and their orange filter (P002) - Does anyone have any comments on these?

    Many thanks!

Cokin style (square) filters are excellent. A lot of us use them, and I love mine. They don't make the lens unweildy at all.

Ref the CPL, as it rotates it will be awkward, but not impossible to use them if it has the thread. You will need to watch the focal length, the wider you go, the more chance you have of the lens seeing the filters and holder as vignette in the images.

You can get a CPL to fit intot the coking if you want.

Also check out Kood filters and holders, they are cheap and good.

there is a link on filters in the link in my sig.

Yes the ring will fit on the UV filter if its a double threaded one ie it has threads on both front and rear of the filter
ive used that system hand held and no its not a problem
not sure what the star 8 is for?
i take it the orange is for mono conversions? if so dont bother as pointed out to me by Chaz you need the full colour tones in digital to get better images, then apply the orange filter in PS/PSE

or you can buy them seperately for £12.5 each + vat but better off getting the set as its cheaper

I have a range of cokin filters. The 8 point starburst filter is not one i use regularly, I think its a bit outdated these days, but has its uses with the right subject, i guess. The coloured filters had their uses in B&W film photography, but in the digital age, the likes of cs4 can do a better job. It's wise to keep an eye on the numbers of filters you may want to use at anyone time, the more surfaces light has to pass through, the more the quality will degrade. I keep a UV filter screwed on my lens permanently. Thinking a small amount of degradation is better than a damaged front element. The filter holder screws on the front of that. I tend to use a circular polarizer more than anything else these days. Quality wise, I find them quite good, but they need to be looked after, because they aren't hard to damage. Most of the grads i have arent dense enough to make a huge amount of difference, and this is something I'm going to need to look at, because the sky is sometimes not my friend, lol. Having said that, I wouldn't mind doing a bit of experimenting with a red filter shooting in Black and white to see what it might do with a blue sky and white clouds.

    Thank you, all!

I don't think the thread on my UV filters are double sided, so I suppose that, if I go for the Cokin system, I'd have to swap them over when needed, but hopefully that wouldn't be too much of a big deal.

The orange filter is (according to their advertising bumpf and accompanying photo) supposed to help give the sky a sunset quality - Is what they show on their site in that pic even possible with a piece of glass?!

TBH that can be done in PS i think with the coloured filters
ps you might want to remove the pics unless you have cokins permission to use them?

One tip I can give you is that the cokin filters ( P series) vignette with lenses wider than 22 mil unless you ask Tenchy about his patented push on anti vignette adapted P series filter. The good thing about the P series is that as has been said,mKood do all the filters you ever need. They even do the CPL which lives in the first slot on the holder. You can get filter adapter rings for all sizes of lens filter threads and they dont affect the handling of the cam. One other tip..dont bother with the cokin filter hood...its total pants and doesnt work and makes the filters vignette massively with wide angle lenses

You can get cokin holders specifically for lenses down to 10mm. Trouble is they will only let you fit a CPL or one filter. They are very shallow, for obvious reasons. The standard ones will let you fit a range of filters. Don't know how common they are, or if they are still made, I picked one up S/H.
