Having never bought a second hand unit before, Im looking for some advice on what I should be looking out for, and if there are any particular things to look out for on the D700?

First off, make sure there is a lens available and a card. Take a couple of pictures and check the quality, making sure everything works. Of course that is assuming that you are doing a hands on buy, and not over the internet.

Both of my DSLR's have been second hand, and both were fine ( D40 bought from a chap on another forum and D200 from my uncle), but I've bought some lenses etc secondhand off ebay. I just made sure the seller seemed trust worthy and thoroughly perused the pictures and feedback of the seller. So far been fine!

Shutter actuations in relation to asking price are one area I would look at.

A shutter is good for 150k give or take, and a replacement is not that expensive considering the overall cost of a new camera, but if the actuations read high (100k +), and also the price is high, add another £200 (approximate off the shelf shutter replacement) on to the price and see how close you are getting towards new territory.

Also, check for sensor damage due to improper cleaning, signs of body distortion due to picking it up with a heavy lens on the front, or droppage. Check how the life cycle is looking on the battery as well.

Unfortunatley for my bank balance, Bandit's posts in a previous thread have got me interested in this as well.

However it SURELY can't be long until Nikon unveila D700x or D800 at which time the D700 may become a bargain (well relatively speaking). I've seen various supposed release dates, but one site suggests Dec 20, but if what all the rumoursites are saying is true then it's likely to be soon, and before Christmas.....

.... I'm going to wait and see what happens. When people get their shiny new700x or whatever upgrade, then new/oldstock D700's may go down in price and there's likely to be secondhand ones coming from upgraders.....

    ...good for people like me!

I don't think that there will be a full frame rig come out (apart from an S version) before there is word on what the D3 is going to be replaced by, as it would be nuts to release a mid-pro body that is of better spec than their flagship camera... However, seeing what they just did with the D7000, then I may not be surprised.

LOL yes there may be a surprise in store. I saw one rumoursite claiming that Nikon was developing the D700x in association with NASA for spaceships... but that a consumer version would have AF to knock the spots of all previous AF versions, Movie capture with proper movie AF and autoISO, a tilting screen like the D5000 but with an LCD like nothing seen before.....

Hmmmmmm weeeeellll anyway I'll beleive that when I see it. Still I reckon something interesting will happen, the D700 was leaked so badly and they've been pretty good at keeping whatever's to replace it under wraps. I certainly didn't see the D7000 coming!

I'm just waiting to see what happens at Photokina... I am confident that we won't get a full pro body there, but something is going to drop. After all, if there wasn't, why drop the 3100, the lenses then the 7000 before? I still reckon we are looking at Barcelona before any of the big guns get updated within the new product cycle.
