It's their job, he's/she's paid to fly us safely from a to b, why should we applaud them. He's trained to be a pilot, it's not like he's flown and landed it with no experience. Most of the time the things on auto pilot anyway.

That's one reason I prefer flying the commuter flights than the trash haulers, though sometimes I do have to go on the tourist flight because of scheduling; and I got a bit sick of it commuting between the UK and here for six months. A couple of times, though the flights have been absolutely awesome in terms of turbulence and heavy landings and that generally shuts them up.

Being on the same flight though, for the six months, I got to know the crew (as each crew generally had an assigned routing), and one evening I asked the captain about what he thought to it as I was getting off and he replied about the loud adverts/announcements that seem to be the norm now-a-days on a lot of these flights that kick in when the rear trucks have hit down, then he leaned over and said quietly "If we've a particularly noisy lot on, we keep twitching the throttles when the thrust reversers are open, soon shuts them up..."

On the way there everyone started clapping and I looked up in complete disbelief. I gave a questioning look to the woman sat across from me.

On the way back I had to drop my head to hide the laughter lol.

The funny thing is, when we flew to the uk in June (no clapping) the pilot announced that the plane had been landed with an automatic landing system!!!!

I was a bit embarrassed to be honest because I bet the pilot is thinking, stupid idiots. (perhaps I'm a snob). I didn't want any one thinking I was a stupid "untraveled" tourist that still thinks you should clap. Ok, yes I am a snob. PMSL

Think you said it right Sean. Trash haulers, I felt like one of them and I was embarrassed. Oh lord!!!!! Seriously a snob but I do t care.

This is the first flight we've booked through a travel agency for YEARS. Won't be doing it again.

It's not being snobbish, but there are at least two distinct classes of air traveller. Those that spend a few hours a year going on a tourist run and have the associated traits of it, or those that fly regularly and would be able to tell something has happened on the flight by the attitude of the crew or how the aircraft is flying. Personally I'm in the latter of the two.
It's not just me that has this idea of it, but it's quite widely recognised in civil aviation circles (the 'trash hauler' bit came from spending a bit of time at the ATC for an article, and it was an 'internal' name that stuck; quite interesting they are); there was an accident back in 1985 (or there abouts) in Manchester where the plane caught fire on the runway, and in the report of that they mentioned that the low injury/fatality rate of it was down to the fact that it was a commuter flight with regular travellers as opposed to a tourist flight.

don't think I've been on a flight that's done that?

If it was a particularly dodgy landing I could understand it maybe. Relief!
