Wow how did you manage to focus on a bee in flight? What camera lens combo? A great image indeed :D

It’s a great shot Ryan. Wonder if you want to share how you are getting the high key effect, do you modify the bg in pp at all?

Thanks Trevor, I do love the challenge of insects in flight.

Many thanks, To get bees in flight takes a few tries and a good amount of observation. I noticed that certain bees like to tackle certain flowers like Verbena in a very specific way every time. They start towards the base and work their way up to the top bloom usually trying to get every one on the way. Once at the top they launch themselves off to the next bloom, if you wait until it is approaching the last bloom and fire off 3-4 shots you can usually get an in flight one. You might find you get a better hit rate using manual or back button focus so the af doesn't hunt as soon as the bee takes off.

Thanks Brian, The background was pretty much that colour but I did clone out a pot rim and oof leaf to isolate the subject better with a plain backdrop. To get the high key effect I set myself up with the sun behind and to the side of me and used the shadow of my head and body to shade the bee whilst a pine table top in the back ground was in the sun. This gave the shot a backlit effect and in post I raised the shadows and dropped the highlights(BG) to try and equalize the exposure of the BG and bee.
It might be that I know how to do it better than explain it, if so let me know and I will try and do better. :)
