I am not personally keen on bird displays, however, it is a great chance to practice BIF shots and try different settings. This was a very bright and sunny day so it was tough to not over expose and the birds were literally flying past my head (felt the breeze from its wings as passed within inches). I was using a FF Nikon and Sigma 70-200 F2.8 Sport lens. 1/1250 (to leave a slight blur on wing tips to infer the speed of flight) f8 for DOF @200mm HH iso pushed to 1600 with spot exposure +1 and spot focus.

G'day Steve

For your "initial efforts" you seem to have exceeded your expectations! image #1 is a cracker, no doubt about it, and #2 is not far behind

fwiw - for my BIF stuff I have set the focus point to a central 3 x 3 grid as a single-point spot focus often goes onto the moving background :(
Also- shutter speeds of 1/2000s to 1/4000s are often used if conditions allow

Excellent shots. The first one is really nice and the second is great too, but could use a little more space around the bird.

Love that first one and a bonus to have the sun on its face
