Thought mono quite suited this shot.

I didn't comment earlier until I had recalibrated my screen. Now that it's set properly.............;)

    Yes, it works very well.

Nice that Ryan, I like the comp and processing style. I can see the look you've gone for, but I find the blacks have gone a little too dark and compressed. I had a quick play in Photoshop but they're a too dark to recover, in particular the bottom of the canon barrel.

Personal preference and all, I can see that you've gone for quite a contrasty processing style.

Cheers guys, I have always been a fan of high contrast monos as might be evident. On this one though I would have preffered some more detail in the lower half of the cannon but the darks were unrecoverable on the original RAW file as the shot was a bit underexposed to begin with. My thought was to underexpose rather than blow the sky but I think I missed that middle ground between the two.

You could cut off the top of the canon and flip it on a reduced opacity layer to give a little bit of detail

That good sir sounds like a sensible solution although I might have a shot I can use with the detail in it already. I had bracketed this shot for HDR but didn't like the results as I was getting ghosting from doing them handheld but I might be able to stack them or some other such photoshop wizardry. Will have a look when I get home later.
