Hi All,

I am looking at getting a new lens (I currently have nothing wide), and torn between the 24-105 F4 or 24-70 F2.8 Mk1. I will be purchasing these second hand.

They come in roughly at the same price, so unsure why the 24-70 isn't that much more for that extra stop of light. In an ideal world, I would love the newest versions, but just wouldn't come under budget.

Just wondering if anyone has used either/or of them. I've used the 24-105 multiple times, but not sure if it is worth getting the 2.8, as worried it could compromise on quality or something. I am not worried about the extra focus length.

I am looking at spending £500 or less. Does anyone have any other recommendations from third party brands? I will be using on a 6D mk1.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

George

I have the 24-105 f4 and it is an excellent walk around lens; I would think that it would be a better alternative to the narrower 24-70 unless it is important that you have the f2.8.

I would go for the 24-105mm (f/4) any day of the week. Brilliant all round lens and if it's within your budget, it's a great value lens.

At a later date you might want to look at the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 - a heavy lens but the wide aperture is quite effective and the lens is significantly less money than the Canon version.

I have the 24-105 and have been using it for years as my go to lens. Wouldn't be without it.
I used to have the 24-70 but sold it on. I didn't find it as sharp as the 24-105 at the edges of the frame, and the MK 1 doesn't have IS.

This ^. You could always get a s/h nifty fifty for shallow dof stuff if needed to go alongside the 24-105.
