Dear forum members,

I am looking for an explanation of what I have found in my grandfathers old photography toolbox (see image). I cant seem to 'just google' it, therefore I am hoping someone here could help me find out what this has been used for.

Hope to hear from any of you soon.

Kind regards.

G'day mate

I will enter the guessing game ...
Presuming that the square panel is covered with black felt?? and there are 2 hinges and pins, I am wondering whether your dad's darkroom / laundry / shower cubicle has an air vent to the outside - thus allowing light to enter as well. Therefore this device might have been his temporary blacking-out panel for those times when he was doing his D&P work ... if this was the case then obviously the wall inside the darkroom would have had a frame matching the hinges shown here

Hey Phil,

Thank you very much for the reply! Much appreciated.

First of all, to elaborate a little on my previous description: The cubicle consists out of a folded piece of cardboard (I suspect) glued into the square in the image, the whole is indeed covered in black felt. I cant seem to find an air-vent like attribute to it, however, I am not entirely certain what to look for...

Furthermore, since I am still very 'green' regarding dark room work, what does D&P stand for?
And what would he have 'blacked out'?

I have never set foot in my grandfathers workplace, he had moved by the time I was born...

Again, thank you very much for this educated guess.

Kind regards
