We used to visit Yellowstone in the winter but now only spring and fall. On our last trip through Yellowstone for the year we stopped at West Thumb which is on the southern end of the park along the edge of Yellowstone Lake and got out and walked the boardwalks. Although I'm not much into the geysers like Old Faithful being I prefer the colorful pool, I'm still in awe over the thermal features the park holds. These 2 shots I decided to take from a kneeling position to be closer to the surface to see how they would look verses my normal standing and shooting from an above composition. It does lend to an entirely different outcome.

Yellowstone is an amazing place for sure.
These must be taken somewhere we never visited!

Yellowstone is an amazing place, been 25 years since we were there .... Are the visitor numbers restricted in the winter?

Steve their at West Thumb which is on the southern end of the park along the edge of Yellowstone Lake. You see signs for West Thumb Geyser and there are all types of features. I will be posting more later.

Paul, no restrictions at all placed on Yellowstone so far. I've got photos from our past winter trips I'll be posting soon. It's an entirely different place all covered in white. Only one road open to traffic being there are folks that live in Cooke City and they only have one way out so the top hwy from Mammoth Hot Spring to Cooke City is left open year round.

You wonder just how many folks have stood in the same spot and taken the same shot.

David it's a must and a photographers dream. I think I love that it has things no other place does. The colors that are born there in the thermal features are extreme. With the sulfur odor and every shade of color it's the only place you can smell a rainbow!
