Another dash out last night between rain storms and a bit of light painting for good measure.

Another really nice image mate. MY only niggle would be I'm not keen on the highlights from the light painting.... but still really nice.

Superb shot. You are making me want to drive somewhere dark. Hertfordshire still has those annoying orange lights. Understandably, they will only replace them as they fail so it could be years before we see a difference here.

I think that's a lot nicer than the original, which just didn't sit well with me. Light from different places looked a little unnatural and it was bright enough to say it was painted. I mean, we know it was painted... but it was a little too obvious. Personal taste to a certain extent, I'd probably soften it down even more.

That's a stunning shot. I agree the "toned down" version is better.

Like that Barry. Prefer the first, the galaxy core has more impact..

Cracking shot - but first for me - makes more of an impact statement

There are a few dark sky areas around Phil but most are a decent trek from you. Kielder is supposed to be excellent but on my brief visit it didn't top raining. I'd guess some of Wales must be pretty dark, I'm in pembrookshire in a few weeks so I'll sus it out then.

I keep fiddling with it now making it softer, making the whole thing more contrasty and I can't quite decide. I like it both ways.

    Thanks Hatter.

    Cheers David.

    Thanks old buddy!

    Cheers Scott.

    Thanks Pete.

Great stuff. Looks like a rocket about to blast off. I must give this a try, I just lack a suitably fast lens I think...

Definitely the second for me if I have to chose, probably worth trying to pop the stars a bit more though as per the first. Also just generally lovely and impressive shot.

Cheers Jason, I got pretty good results with my f/2.8 UWA zoom but in my usual overly critical picky way I wasn't happy with the noise and image quality that I got at ISO3200. Being able to shoot at ISO800 at f/1.4 has improved that immensely. I still shot the foreground at f/8 to get the depth of field as I was blasting it with light anyway.

Many thanks, I have since re-edited it to give the sky highlights more pop again as I agreed with those comments too.

I don't mind the brighter painting effect. Great idea for the image effect. I have a problem with "The Rocket" being in the centre. I don't know why nobody else has commented but I reckon a few steps to your right would have placed the building nicely on the left ROT vertical line. I only say this because the building is covering part of the lovely bright line of stars in the centre of the milky way. Just my observation, but a cracking photo.

Thanks Isac. It's a fair point but my initial idea for the shot was to try for symmetry. I wanted the Milky way vertical and to be coming up directly behind the building.

Unfortunately the Milky Way wasn't vertical until about 2am and by that point the galactic core is well below the horizon also the sky clouded up around midnight so it was never going to happen. With all that going on I stuck with the centre composition without giving much thought to changing it.

Also I rarely give much thought to the rules preferring instead to go with what I think looks and feels best at the time.

the building is better in the second and the galaxy is better in the first IMO. Those niggles aside, its a cracking shot. well done.

Very nice Barry. Stunning colours and very dramatic. I would have prefered the tip of the tower to be a bit futher left, giving a bit more breathing space between it and the milky way.
