Between a $30 off sale, and a $30 coupon I snagged a great deal on a Seagate, desktop 6gb USB3 drive. In the process of transferring a lot of stuff. Love the speed this thing is working at.

Is that going to be your boot drive? I would love to clone my boot drive to a new one but I'm afraid something will go amiss.

I went over to a large usb3 external drive for storage a couple years ago and can't understand how I made due with the relative poor speeds of usb2. I ended up getting a second one and once a month back up the original to the new one which I keep in a drawer for extra peace of mind.

I have done this several times using Easeus Todo Backup Free and have never had a problem. The process is super easy and creates an exact copy of the file structure so all you have to do is swap the drives. I tend to keep the original for a couple months just in case something doesn't work as it should in which case I can just reinstall the old one but I have never had to do that.

I have a 500 gb SSD, and a 2tb internal HHD. Programs that require speed like Windows, LR and PS run from the SSD, those that dont need fast read/write, run from the internal HHD. The new external drive will be mostly archive storage, images and documents that I don't need on a regular basis anymore. The external is installed as a drive in the LR catalog so all editing is still active.I've been backing up to a 4tb Passport, but the plan is to move over to an online service.

Here's a question for the group. My practice has been to save my JPEG files for web or print to a print file. Eventually I'll delete them if I don't really see a need, as I can always generate another. What do others do? Seems like a waste of space long term.

I deleted exported jpgs. I have everything in Lightroom.

Storage is so cheap the time and effort it takes to delete stuff for me just doesn’t seem worth it. I just add a new 6tb hdd to my box when the last one is getting full. I have backups on an external NAS too which has silly amounts of space being an enterprise level product.

Last 6tb drive I purchased was £120 and at the current rate that will last me about 4 years. So for £30 a year I get to just keep everything. If I was to spend an hour a month deleting stuff, at my current hourly rate that adds it to a shed load more than £30, and what would I save?

Just out of interest which one did you get? I'm looking to get another backup option to use for time machine

Which element Richard? The NAS I use is not a consumer product so not really suitable for home use. It is a perk of my job. For home use look at things like the WD Mycloud.

HDD wise the last one I bought was a Seagate.
