Well, it is for me anyway.... I've started shooting from home and have set up a little corner in my office for close up stuff etc, had a little play around with some new toys this evening and this was my first effort, quick and dirty edit but I'm quite pleased with the results. :)

    Thank you.

I purchased a special water drop kit. I run it with an app from my phone, there's a lot of figuring out to do though, it's not exactly straight forward. You need to thicken the water, but not too much, you have to try and reduce the surface tension of the water as well if possible as this gives a higher "bounce" from the first drop.
Then I add food colouring, then some milk. This gets put in a bowl and some in the dropper unit which is about 15" or so above the bowl, then I select the size of the drops, the delay on the second drop to collide with the first drop when it almost reaches it's highest point on the rebound, and the delay on the flash to catch it at exactly the right time. This is all measured in milliseconds, and even just 1 millisecond makes a big difference.
The dropper unit links to a trigger which links to the camera to fire the shutter and the flash units.

Thanks mate, this is honestly the most fun I've had in ages, lol. It really is an amazing bit of kit!

Great first go. We had an exhibition of this type of shot in our town recently, Pictures where selling at £100 to £250 a go.

    Nicely done Jim.

Like the colours. I expect someone will come along saying 'It would look good in mono '

Makes all the difference using collision drops.

Very quick to set up, very long to get a decent result!

Thanks Pete, if anyone says anything about trying it in mono, they’d better be prepared to receive a clip round the ear!
    Lol

It would look great in photometric 8-bit greyscale. ;)

Excellent - psychedelic mushrooms. Reminds me of the sixties . . . :blurry-drunk:

I'd love to have a go at this myself at some stage. I tried it with film (using just water) in the late seventies, but it was too expensive because of all the failed shots. Now digital should make it a LOT cheaper. :D

    Great shot!
A bit of dayglo colouring and UV light could also produce interesting results. Some of the best ones I took were when I didn't dilute the thickened liquid like I should have - as a result of frustration alluded to above!

Blimey, yeah.... it's the most frames I ever shot in a session.... lol. You go bankrupt trying to shoot it with film! If you're interested, here was my set-up below, aside from the specialist kit it's very basic.

Thanks for sharing your setup, that really is appreciated. Looks like something for me to try on a cold, wet winters day.

I agree Jim thanks for that, I tried some years ago when I got my D50 and just using the onboard flash with water dripping from the tap into the sink. Hope you don't mind me adding this one. Another drip..jpg

Very good. If this is a first effort I look forward to seeing future results.

I’d love to have a go at this and am looking at investing in a trigger when I have a bit more time.
