Camera flash speeds vary. That said, a lot default to 1/200 of a second. I am not sure what you are really trying to do.

Hi DonS,

Thank you so much for your reply. I have a machine with light source (halogen bulb) 12V and 50W, it has a regular on/Off switch. I wanted to add a push button to convert it into a flash light (1/200 sec) or slower than that.

I was about to ask the same question.
Hi Rogers S,

Thank you so much for your reply.
It is a slit lamp machine (something for eye examination) with light source (halogen bulb) 12V and 50W, it has a regular on/Off switch. I wanted to add a push button to convert it into a flash light (1/200 sec) or slower than that.

Do you want to use this for eye/retinal photography?

I'm afraid it's impossible. There is no way you could get an incandescent lamp to switch on and off at the speed (or light intensity) of a flash tube.

A flash fires in 1000's of a second. The 200th is just the maximum shutter speed will sync without black bars showing. Shutter speed has nothing to do with freezing action, it just controls how much ambient light you want in the shot. The slower the shutter speed, the more ambient light you let in.
