That and a lot of people just used it as a dump to back up images. I saw one person on Facebook say they spent a long time sorting 17,000 family photos and putting them up there all marked as private.

    Multiple personalities? :)

I got it at logon. Their Blog page has all the details.

Hmm I never saw that. When I log in I see samples of people's recent uploads that I have followed or groups I'm in. I go to my photostream then

You can put me down as one it will affect. I currently have 2216 photos on there, I don't use it to host them elsewhere, but I do share them from there for friends and family to see rather than posting them to loads of groups.

So I'm another one looking for an alternative as I can't really justify £50 a year (or whatever unfavourable exchange rate $50 translates to according to Smugmug.)

All the info is on this page btw: https://www.flickr.com/lookingahead

Currently it will cost you £29 if you take advantage of the discount, but that is only for this year so far.

It's about time something got done with it, Flickr used to be great but turned in to just another image dump site; it lost direction a long time ago and with this prune off it'll leave the folk who want to be there (as in the paid up members) and then the dumpers will be off to somewhere else. Hopefully it's not too late to save Flickr, but it seems to be going the way of MySpace in the face of things like Facebook/Instagram and facing stiff competition from places like F-stoppers and other seriously specialised photographic websites.

I did read about 1 user with 4TB of data spread over 6 accounts, all images private. That kind of abuse needed stamping out.

I've heard a few large ones like that, I've a mate who only used it as a back up instead of putting cash in to a NAS or a proper cloud storage system. The thing that I was starting to find more disturbing was how many smaller (and duplicated) accounts were popping up and being tagged up with quite common image keywords but the images were not really what you'd want popping up in the office whilst going on an idea trawl.

I recall people talking about the great community it used to have, how great the groups were and all, but I never found that. I joined in 2009 and it was already Yahoo.

When I started with it back in 2007, there were some really good groups but then fragmentation started and sub-groups appeared and the quality did go down a lot. Just one of them things really, I used to use it a lot, but now I've not got any images up there at all... It just got too much of a hassle to put things up when the interactions went down and the stuff I was interested in started to curdle somewhat.

Some of the more technical groups are still fantastic resources such as https://www.flickr.com/groups/homemadelens/ I sometimes think the more obscure the subject the better the group works out :)

6712 images on there.. well that's about a week of my life wasted having to download them all elsewhere.. if I can find somewhere else to put them.. its just pure greed since yahoo sold out to smug mug

That is true. You are interested in something obscure and then you find others also interested you tend to talk about it more.

Seems that I go for quantity over quality ... over 70,000 photographs on my website now :)

I asked about my account - I've currently got a "Pro" account for free because I have my broadband through BT.
This is the reply I got:

Thank you for contacting Flickr Support. My name is Jim and I am happy to assist you with your Flickr account.
Looking into this, I do see that you are a Yahoo Partner Pro. What the future of your subscription will be has not been updated to us at this time. However, I have reached out in regards to this as we do not see many subscriptions like this regularly, and as soon as we get an update we will pass that along to you.
In the meantime, you have all the benefits of the Pro subscription.

I think it's pretty obvious I'm going to have to pay the same as everyone else if I want to keep my "Pro" account, but it's interesting they won't tell me that (yet).

I had my renewal email reminder yesterday. Just a ‘we’ll take 38 quid off you in a couple of weeks.’ No mention/apology/excuse/bs about it costing me 20 quid more than last year.
